OpenLDAP Proxy

Surfing various LDAP related mail lists over the weekend I came upon post after post that revealed the great extent to which OpenLDAP has become a common solution as an LDAP proxy. That intrigued me because I've recently been thinking again about both high-availability and data integration issues in which OpenLDAP's proxy and meta backends could provide an answer.
